♦ The Business in One Paragraph

Business context behind the case study

Green-Gen is a family-run, IICRC and Green Seal certified cleaning company serving Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, and McHenry counties. Its differentiator is non-toxic, eco-friendly cleaning backed by certifications, not just marketing copy. Phone: (630) 703-5942. The business holds a 4.9 average across 420+ Google reviews.

The Challenge

Strong fundamentals, but invisible to AI

Green-Gen had strong fundamentals: certifications, real reviews, a long service list (carpet, fine rug, upholstery, leather, tile and grout, hardwood, LVP/LVT, water damage, moth damage, mattress, air duct, countertop reconditioning, house cleaning). But when we tested AI answers in their market, three things stood out:

  • ChatGPT and Perplexity were recommending generic national chains for "eco-friendly carpet cleaning Chicago" — even though Green-Gen's positioning was a near-perfect match.
  • Google's AI Overview for "how often should I clean my carpets" wasn't pulling from any local Chicago cleaner; it was citing a national franchise's blog.
  • Voice search results for "carpet cleaner near me Naperville" returned the GMB three-pack but no extracted answer.

The site was technically sound but written for a 2018 search engine, not a 2026 answer engine.

What We Did: Made Expertise Extractable

01

Rewrote service pages around extractable answers

Every service page got a "quick answer" block at the top — a 40–60 word direct response to the page's primary question, written so a language model could lift it cleanly. For example, the eco-friendly carpet cleaning page now opens with a definition of what "eco-friendly carpet cleaning" actually means, what certifications matter (IICRC, Green Seal, CRI), and what makes Green-Gen's process qualify. That's the kind of paragraph a generative engine grabs verbatim.

02

Built out FAQ schema on every service page

Not just three boilerplate questions — we mined Google's "People Also Ask," Reddit threads in r/CleaningTips, and actual customer email questions Green-Gen had archived. Each service page now carries 8–14 FAQs with proper FAQs page JSON-LD. Drying time, kid/pet safety, frequency, what to move beforehand, how steam cleaning differs from dry cleaning — all answered in 2–4 sentence chunks.

03

Added LocalBusiness + Service schema with full geographic markup

Each of their 50+ service-area pages (Naperville, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Barrington, Winnetka, Elgin, etc.) got proper areaServed and serviceType structured data, plus aggregate review schema pulling their real Google rating.

04

Created comparison

Pages like "Steam cleaning vs. dry cleaning: which is better for my carpet?" and "Should I clean my Oriental rug at home or send it out?" These are the exact phrasings AI assistants get asked, and there was almost no authoritative local content answering them.

05

Published an llms.txt file

At the root of the domain, summarizing what Green-Gen does, who they serve, what their certifications are, and which content on the site is most authoritative. Some of the major LLMs respect this; some don't yet, but the cost of including it is roughly zero.

06

Strengthened E-E-A-T signals

Added a real owner bio, named technicians on team pages, listed certifications with logos and verification links, and surfaced their 100% money-back guarantee on every service page. AI engines are increasingly trained to weight named, verifiable expertise.

What Changed

What Changed in Months 3-6

Citations in ChatGPT and Perplexity for variations of "best eco-friendly carpet cleaning Chicagoland" went from zero to consistent. Green-Gen now appears by name in roughly 5 of 10 test queries we run weekly.

Google AI Overview features for queries like "how often should you steam clean carpets" and "is steam cleaning safe for pets" now pull from Green-Gen's FAQ pages in the Chicagoland geography.

Organic traffic to FAQ-rich service pages rose 21% quarter over quarter, with a meaningful portion coming from long-tail conversational queries that didn't exist in the keyword data a year ago.

The free quote form started receiving submissions where the customer wrote, in the message field, things like "ChatGPT recommended you" — a small signal, but a real one.
